This is a part of the ruins of castle Altwied, towering the tiny town with the same name. It is sutiated in the valley of Wied river not far away from Rhine near Koblenz (please see map).
Its oldest parts were built in the year 1129 by count Metfried von Wied. The town is first is mentioned in a deed of the year 1275. In 13th and 14th century the whole town was enclosed by a town wall with several gate towers. In complementary photo you can see the rests of one.
The castle never has been sieged, attacked or destroyed. However in 17th century the castle was given up because of its remote situation and its dilapidation began.

Hallo Frank, Castle ruins are always a favorite with me. There are plenty of them along the Danube between Linz and Vienna. Interesting how this building deteriorated over the years. Most of the ones that I have seen were devastated by cannon fire or some other form of action. This is still impressive, even though it is a shell. I really liked your CI. Seeing scenes like that bring back fond memories of Europe, as one only needs to look at an old wall and an arch you have a beautiful picture which you have shown us here. Very well done. 40C here no rain expected until mid July. Regards, Roger.

Hi Frank,
I like to contemplate an old wald or a ruin of a castle, especially if they are well framed and exposed, which is the case here. We have a lot of them in good old Luxemburg, and in Belgium!!! But you are right, people tend to find them a bit boring from time to time, and that is a pitty, then tese old walls have a lot to tell us.
I am a bit unregular lately, I bought a new computer and I am having a lot of trouble getting everything working as it should.
Greetings from a cold and wet Luxemburg

Hi Frank,
My first action here was to check the map view, to find where this interesting old ruin would be found. You have certainly found a good POV, this picture is well balanced and the sharpness is perfect.
Kind regards
Gunnar
