PRESENT THEME

February 2012 (starting 02/01/2012)

Celebrations - This month, our baby Photofolia.net celebrates its 2nd birthday and we would like to celebrate it by bringing images to our gallery that depict the many ways in which man or nature commemorating happiness, life, faith, hope and whatever you think should be celebrated.

In short, we would like to see photos that make us feel good, that in some way show a celebration or a happy mood. Something you feel conveys a happy feeling or represents celebration in any form.

To "heat your engines" and get your thoughts flowing, here are a just few possibilities - remember, there are no limitations to your interpretations - the birth of a child, a wedding, a new job, a bachelor party, the birthday of a city, an achievement, a dream come true, the crowning of a king or queen... The list goes on. Be creative!

Please do not forget include a note and tell us why you think the photo fits the theme. And please add the word "celebration" as part of the title or in parenthesis.

A Very Important Notice:
The Theme of the Month Team (TMT) would like to draw your attention to a few changes that have been made to manage the themes. The "How to" instructions can now be found here. Among other things, it explains the new member voting system which will commence at the end of this month for the February theme.

PREVIEW OF UPCOMING THEMES

March 2012

Size Matters - Big and Small - Big and small are really relative terms, depending on what you are comparing. In comparison to an ant, we are giants; standing next to the ocean, we are tiny. So the photos can be of small things in life, an insect, a little bird, a baby (people or animals), a tiny flower or plant. Or they can be of big things like mountains, glaciers, the cosmos. The list goes on. We're looking for perspective. What is big? What is small?

How do they compare?

They can also be images that make us feel big or small, like a person in front of a mountain, a boat in the middle of an ocean, a camel in the middle of an endless sand dune. Or a macro of an ant that is enormous compared to a grain of sand.

April 2012

Awakening - In the northern hemisphere, April is the month where nature begins to stir, waking from its winter sleep. The days get longer, the trees and pastures become green, the flowers begin to bloom. The convertibles drive with their tops down, the ladies put on their flowered dresses, the animals shed their thick fur and everything comes to life, a new birth. In the southern hemisphere, autumn approaches, but it is also a time of awakening as colors intensify and nature prepares herself for the quiet season. And to top it all off, April also marks the 1st year anniversary of ToM, which was founded in the spirit of 'awakening' so that the members could actively participate in a specific theme. We're sure that you will have lots of posts fitting for the theme of 'Awakening' - spring and fall, cool cars, short dresses, the first scarf being clad in the south or shed in the north. Or an image of praise for the PF community, having fun with the Theme of the Month. Life is an eternal awakening.

PAST THEMES

January 2012

Places of Worship - old and new - That can be a church, a mosque, a pagan statue, an abbey, a place of pilgrimage. People worship all kinds of things, so be creative - you decide and show it to us. Let's hope we don't get too many images showing a coffee mug! :-) Please, one very important thing, however - we do NOT want to get into any kind of religious debate or offend anyone, so please keep your notes neutral about religion. And don't forget to put the word "Worship" in your title.

December 2011

Let there be Light - OK you might argue you can't take a photograph without light, so we are looking for very special light or images that show us other kinds of light.

This is the time of year when Festivals of Light abound eg Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas, Lumière, to name but four. Why not use those ideas as your starting point and take it from there. It is not limited to Festivals, but they surly make good subjects. So, ?.armed with camera and tripod, head off into the city lights or to a "light" venue of your choice. Alternatively search through your archives. Let's set a new record this month.

Ideally it is the Lights that should be the subject of the image, so please add a comprehensive note which also explains why your image fits the theme. And just to re-emphasise a point: it isn't a competition; it's the fun of taking part that is important.

November 2011

Animals - There is no denying that we enjoy attributing human-like thoughts and emotions to animals. We think eagle is proud, fox is cunning, swan is faithful, and lion is king in the world of animals. Sometimes meeting an animal can leave us in awe, like when you see a tiger in the wild, strolling around majestically. Some animals make us laugh until tears come to our eyes, just look up some videos on YouTube featuring cats and see if you can keep a straight face. Many of us interact with animals on regular basis - we have pets, we take our kids to the zoo, we ride horses and ponies, we travel and sometimes are lucky to see animals in the wild. Dig in your archives, or spend a day observing and photographing your dog or cat, or animals in the zoo or nature park, if you lucky to have some near you, and show us funny, sad, thought-provoking photos of our little brothers.

In your note please explain why did you chose this image for the theme, and add the word "ANIMALS" to your title to make it easy for us to identify all contributions. As always you can contribute as many images as you like.

Please remember that the intention of ToM is not that of a competition. There are no prizes to win here. Rather we would like to encourage PF members to take a new perspective on a subject, to get out with the camera and to get out of the comfort zone. In a way, we see it a bit as an assignment, or a challenge, should you choose to accept it. The most important part is to see new things, learn new things and to have fun doing so

October 2011

Shapes and Abstracts - We started with the idea of geometric shapes, thinking about architecture and other man-made features, but we widened the scope to give you plenty of chance to interpret the theme as you see fit. As well as geometric shapes your image might have lines, angles, curves etc. Your imagination and ingenuity to explain how it fits the theme are the only limits.

In your note please explain how your image fits the theme and add the word "Abstract" or "Shapes" to your title to make it easy for us to identify all contributions. As always you can contribute as many images as you like.

We're looking forward to seeing how ingenious you can be. I know we won't be disappointed.

September 2011

The Journey - Your photos can be images that include any types of transportation going places and/or a person going somewhere, like walking on a trail or on a bicycle, car driving on the road, trains, air planes, buses, tramways, cable cars, sky lift and much more. It can be something taken on your journey from the car, from the train, air plane, boat, hiking trail, ideally something that depicts the idea of "The Journey". Please ensure your note explains how your photo fits the theme.

To make it easy for us to identify your contribution, you should add the word "Journey" after your title. We really don't want to miss out any contributions.

There is a famous quote by Greg Anderson, "Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it."

Often times, we're just trying to get to our destination, we forget to enjoy the journey itself and to appreciate the "places between the places," for some reasons not designated as "special", and yet we know, if we stop and look, just as special as anywhere else; we might even discover something new. We are so focused on getting to our next destination. Definitely there are gems to see on the journey we need to give ourselves the time to enjoy them.

August 2011

Water, Water Everywhere' ? H2O - As summer is in full swing and the heat rises, some of us are going through intensive heat wave in the last few weeks. What better way to relieve the heat with cool and refreshing water. So let's get ready to go out to have some fun by the water, but don't forget your camera! Wherever your nearest water sources are, the more water the better: Waterfalls, Dam, Pools, Ponds, Lakes, Streams, Rivers, Ocean, and what else have I left out?..oh! and your computers. I'm sure there are plenty of "Water" photos somewhere in your archive. Scoop it out, drain it, squeeze it, however you retrieve it, just do it as soon as you can. The cut-off date is August 26. To make it easy for us to identify the entries, please include the word "Water" at the end or somewhere on your title.

Ideally, water feature should be a large part and/or main focus of your composition. For those who like them really cold, we will accept Ice, snow, and glacier for that matter, as a form of water, though that will be more than refreshing :) Oh, Let's not forget the "Rain"

For those of us in the southern hemisphere, I know you are in you winter season, perhaps some hot springs and thermo pools to warm you up.

Have fun and let's make a big splash for the month of August! Look like it going to be a wet month.

July 2011

The Artist's Work - This month's theme is 'The Artist at Work'. You decide what constitutes an artist....photographer, painter, sculptor? Maybe musician or Mother Nature herself...You decide and show us how creative you can be.

June 2011

Sunday - What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about SUNDAY? Is it sunlight streaming into your childhood bedroom? Is it the challenge of a complicated dish you are determined to cook for your relatives that will come for dinner?

What is your SUNDAY like? Is it lazy, or is it full of things to do? Is it the best day of the week for you? Or is it the worst day, because Monday lurks just around the corner?

May 2011

This thing called LOVE - Love has a lot of facets - show us your interpretation of the theme of LOVE - romantic, unconditional, superficial, maternal, erotic, sensual, etc - you decide!
