A dream came true! My trip to the Bolivian altiplano was in the making for 12 years. It was pure adventure. Rather than going for an organized tour I preferred to make my own tour. I engaged in renting a 4x4 car and inviting a couple of friends.
Present image was taken at the Sajama National Park. The center piece of this N.P. is the sacred and extinct Sajama volcano (21,463 feet, 6.542 m) and the repopulation with native camelids, in particular Vicuñas (see complementary image).
The big, like moss looking plant in the foreground is NOT moss but a VASCULAR plant called Yareta or Llareta (Azorella compacta). The plant is estimated to grow approximately 1.5 cm per year. Many are thought to be over 3,000 years old. Present sample had a diameter of about 1,5 m which allows you to calculate how old it might be. Yareta is traditionally harvested for fuel, but its very slow growth makes this practice highly non-sustainable.
Interested in a photo tour through the American Southwest, Brazil, Bolivia, Namibia or Tuscany? I can help you with it and make you come back with unique shots.

Sajama sounds so completely Japanese :-) How wonderful to make dreams not only stay there in our fantasy but try to make them happen. Beautiful this grassy green round foreground, impressive in what altitude it grows plus it looks pretty dry too around it. Fuel? No way, imagine if they harvest a 3000 year old example. The grey skies are really really nice, it makes the "drama" around the volcano perfect. Ohhh and sweet the CI, what luck you had. One even looks over to you yet kind of shy not coming too near.
Gorgeous picture to start your bolivian tour. The Ci is also cute with the animals (lamas? alpagas? ....)
The plant in foreground with threatening sky but a hint of blue and the centered mountain : stunning impact.
Que bela aventura deve ter sido. Bela foto com vários planos bastante apreciáveis. Interessante é que ela começa e termina com chave de ouro : da fotogênica e original Yareta até a bela montanha nevada e misteriosa.
Amazing BG information. I like your wide and perspective corrected composition. While the FG plant grabs your attention the BG is, I want to say odd, really different. I suspect elevation, light, and clouds have given it this odd or "other worldly" look.
I like it and it is an excellent image.
Jo and I along with the dogs will be in Santa Fe in mid May.
A very attractive photo to start your photos from Bolivian altiplano. The green plant stands out from the desert like environment and the volcano stands majestic on the background. Thanks for the informative note!
