If you ever find yourself in Hpa An, one of must-sees in Bat Cave, the home of 100,000 plus bats.
Just 9 km away from the city, near Thanlyin river, Bat Cave is a small cave that cannot be entered. Nevertheless, take a tuk-tuk to the small pagoda at sunset and wait for the spectacle to begin. As the sky loses its light the bats start to emerge, birds of prey arrive making zigzag manoeuvres as they swoop to snatch their evening meal.
Local people start beating drums whereupon the bats react to the sounds and make interesting patterns in flight and not only for five minutes but at least 40 minutes.
What a wonderful natural theatre!
Fantastic to see this with your own eyes, the drum play of the locals made it probably even more unforgettable. 40 minutes seems very long, they fly into the night?
Everlasting (2019/10/11 05:05:47): Yes, it was dark when we left the rock where we had been standing with our magitorch, and the bats were still flying out of the cave. What is even more fascinating is the fact that this spectacle happens every morning as the thousands of bats return to the cave.
