This is a little wooden statue in a prayer niche of the old church St. Peter & Paul in the little village Wormbach. It is situated in the low mountain range Rothaargebirge about 100 km east of Cologne (please see map view). It is a Virgin of Mercy, in German: Schutzmantelmadonna (Sheltering-cloak Madonna). It shows several small depicted people seeking protection under the outspread cloak of Mary. This pictorial tradition began in 13th century and I think it's a very touching presentation of the human desire for security, for shelter. The here shown statue was made about 1480.
Virgin of mercy - this could be our only hope for saving us and our climate!
Interesting find, beautiful sculpture. The sheltered under her cloak people look very realistic, so does she herself. Composition and the rest of photographic qualities superb.
Your picture shines!
Greetings from very gloomy weather.
We do all want shelter & security. You managed the flash well. I've never been able to sort out understanding the correct changes to make with front curtain and rear curtain adjustments. GLF, Patricia
there is a church in ouro preto in brazil where the main portal is adorned with a similar image, but the mantle of mary is larger and the members of a religious congregation are protected by her. lovely this old sculpture. this is a kind of artwork I like a lot. TFS.
PS: here we are facing days of intense heat. the rains aren't so frequent as it would be typical at this part of the year and despite the drought was gone, looks like a "green drought" is coming.
