You won't really imagine how much this shot was challenging.
First, I had to kick the ass of the photographer with his big tripod which was standing in front of this piece of wood. Then, I had to set up my tiny (but smart and elegant) tripod in the flood. The tripod was vibrating with the help of the water. And finally, I had to manage the exposure. You can guess the contrast between light and shadow was strong in the bottom of the canyon.
Typical view you have when doing The Narrows hike in Zion NP.
It's such a nice canyon, really fascinating here. I fully agree that the light is difficult, dark and yet you can see strong light moving in from the canyon behind. Excellent light management for sure. This simple junk of wood works extremely well in your foreground, its rough surface is something to hold on while the river is not tamed and you have work against the current. I hope your rubber socks were warm enough ... Lulll ...
sevy (2016/12/07 13:06:37): Yes, neopren socks were perfect to stay warm. Thanks to wonder about my feet :-)
Your tripod was vibrating in the water? Seriously? You call this "smart and elegant" thing a tripod? LOL!!!
Next time you get here into my Southwest and try to kick my a** I will provide you with a good proof of what a real tripod is able to do aside holding my camera rock solid in the strong stream or against gale like winds.
I did not even look yet into my images of our trip. They are already transmitted and secured on my two exterior hard drives as well as on an online server. I might start with working on these images next year.
What to say about your image? Well, I was the one who was standing in front of you ... so the composition must be good and you certainly nailed it with the vertical frame. Good light management too!
sevy (2016/12/07 17:23:15): 😆
I modified the tripod to put a short column. It is even more smart now.
Ha ha! I was imagining you had one of Fulvio's "morons" in your way. A good thing I read Peter's comment; he would probably object strongly if I called him a "moron" 😂😜
Before I read your note I was thinking about the exposure, because the 2 seconds to get the soft flow of the water must have caused problems with the bright canyon wall beyond the slot. Although a small part of the image, the bright reflected glow from the wall is very important to the success of the image imo.
sevy (2016/12/07 17:24:23): Good you read previous posts before, you avoided issues, LOL !
For an elegant tripod your results are top notch. I love the long exposure and the swirls in the water. November 11, the water must have been really, I mean really cold, burr. I have been in this canyon during the summer months and the water really does numb the feet.
I don't know, some of these photographers have such big heads, bigger than some of the rocks in the water, I hope he got wet. :) Did he buy the wine that evening as a bit of an apology?
sevy (2016/12/11 12:26:08): No wine, but we tried Polygamy beer :-)
Great image which brings back great memories for me. 15 years ago I waded up the Narrows until I could touch either side with my arms ever conscious of a flash flood ! The water level can look very benign but hides its power. In your image you capture the feeling I remember so well.
