One doesn't know exactly when Ludwig van Beethoven was born – however one knows that he was baptised on 17 December 1770 in Bonn. As children of that era were traditionally baptised the day after birth in the Catholic Rhine country, and it is known that Beethoven's family and his teacher celebrated his birthday on 16 December, most scholars accept 16 December 1770 as his date of birth.
Beethoven is acknowledged to be one of the giants of classical music. Together with Bach and Brahms, he is referred to as one of the "three Bs". He still is the most frequently performed of all classical composers. He was also a radical artist who constantly reinvented himself, expanded the boundaries of music and posed questions to society.
By and by the anniversary celebrations of his 250th birthday next year are beginning in his birthplace, Bonn.
In nearly all graphic or sculptural representations he is shown with an earnest, nearly grumpy face – perhaps because of the many personal misfortunes he had to endure in his life. Please see here and here for example.
Therefore an art installation of 700 little sculptures of Beethoven, a smiling and very relaxed Beethoven, were placed with a wink on Münsterplatz (cathedral square) in Bonn – in front of his monument there. They were made by the conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl. It's interesting to see that nearly all visitors on Münsterplatz are also smiling ...
His name will forever be remembered as long as there are civilization. Fascinating art project. It though they were chess piece in the park. He is much shorter than I imagine :)
Most genius or talented artist are not the most fortunate or happy people. I'm sure you can name a few of them, one that I admired is the like of Van Gogh and many more....but they certainly bring us lots of admiration and smiles too for being able to appreciate their accomplishments that they left behind for us and our future generations.
A nice one about this great composer. I of course often listen to its music. I particularly apprecate the 7th symphony and also sonates (moonlight, appassionata & pathetic).
Have a nice WE.
What a great installation, photographers must feel like they have reached paradise :-) I like Beethoven a lot too, such wonderful music. He will never be forgotten. I will keep my eyes open, maybe they also do things over here, I am sure there must be concerts. Vielen Dank fürs Erinnern.
A fascinating installation of statues of this giant of music. Fine contrast of yellow and green colours. Thanks for the informative note with interesting links. His 250th birthday certainly will be celebrated all over the world with many fine concerts.
Greetings from still chilly Espoo,
