It look very intimidating and uncomfortable to wear this lip plate. They look as intimidating and uncomfortable for us to see when they take off the lip plate, with lower lip hanging bay below their chin. The theory is that back when many of the African people where being captured and sold as slave, they make themselves as ugly and scary looking and undesirable that nobody want to take them.
The Mursi are a Nilotic pastoralist ethnic group that inhabits southwestern Ethiopia. They principally reside in the Debub Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, close to the border with South Sudan. According to the 2007 national census, there are 7,500 Mursi, 448 of whom live in urban areas; of the total number, 92.25% live in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region. Surrounded by mountains between the Omo River and its tributary the Mago, the home of the Mursi is one of the most isolated regions of the country.
Truly a fascinating image. I can't say this lip extension is really pretty from my western "eye" point of view but this does not mean that some other folks find it attractive. Uffff it nearly hurts me looking at this person :-)
Another great docu type image. I also like the CI a lot too. The square format works really well but also the color shows some interesting details, especially the bright yellow of the necklace.
What a contrast with the previous image with her confident awareness of her beauty. This woman seems like she is in pain. It is a well done image Interesting how this type of beauty has been embraced by some here in the US; even though it seems to be more common in men and they use their ears. Ear plugs seem much less disabling to me than lip plates. The colorful Ci did not change my perception of your work as much as it did in the previous image. HLJx4, Pat
